Jones graduated with a Master's of Business Administration degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Phoenix (1999).
Jones graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Speech Communication from Oklahoma State University (1994)

Derek Jones played football at Oklahoma State University, lettering for four years under Coach Pat Jones from 1990 to 1994. Jones was selected as a Pre-Season All-Big Eight TE by the Sporting News. Jones played professionally for 2 seasons with the Houston Outlaws of the RFL and then the Houston Marshals of the SFL.

Coach Jones began his coaching career as a defensive assistant at Klein Oak High School under Head Coach Jason Glenn who spent many years in the NFL, and was an All-American at Texas A&M University. Jones was hired to develop a young but talented group of kids on all levels of the program. He was named the freshman A team defensive coordinator. As DC, Oak experienced its first undefeated season and was crowned the district champion at 10-0. Jones called an aggressive defense that created at least 3 turnovers per game, (44) for the season. During Jones tenure at Oak, Oak won 2 Bi-District titles, 2 Area Titles, and qualified for the regional round twice.

Jones was hired in 2020 (covid year) as the recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach for Fulshear High School. Fulshear made the playoffs for the 1st time in school history that season. Since taking over the defensive line, Fulshear has been to the playoffs 4 years in a row. Winning the Bi-district title 4 times, the Area title 2 times, and qualified for the regional round twice. Jones career record at Fulshear from 22-25 is 34-4, including 2 undefeated regular seasons!

A native of Palestine, Texas, Jones was a Blue Chip athlete and was voted Top 100 in Texas by the Dallas Morning News. Jones won the bronze medal in the shot put at the 1990 UIL Texas Track and Field State Championships in Austin his senior season, and was selected 1st Team All-State. He was offered by numerous colleges for his services at both TE and DE as he was a 3X All-District, All-Area, All-Region player. Offers included, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor, Ole Miss. Jones was also an All-Region band member playing the trumpet.

Coach Jones (Bones) as the kids affectionally call him, has coached defensive line for 9 seasons. While at Klein Oak 2016-2020, Coach Jones consistently developed some of the toughest linemen in the state with his "DAWG" mentality programs. His lines are consistently athletic, strong, disciplined, and relentless each season. His players have received All-District honors every season, as voted by coaches within the district. Not only has at least 3 players every year been voted all-district, he has developed numerous P4, G5, DII, DIII, NAIA, and JUCO linemen. His entire DL was offered by Big 12 UH last season!

Stats for that season, just from the defensive line: (Regular Season Only-10 games)-40 TFLS, 41
assists, 1 assist for loss, 21 sacks, 4 knockdowns, 55 QBP'S, 6 caused fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 blocked kicks, 1 batted pass.
